I“Cloudburst From Daisy Lake” invites you to join me on a bright, sunny May day on the shores of Daisy Lake, near Whistler, BC. Towering in the distance is Cloudburst Mountain, and in this painting, its immense presence, combined with its powerful reflection, means they take up most of the image, dominating the scene.
This was another of my early plein air paintings, created in the solitude of the wilderness with just my puppy Jasper for company. The experience of painting in such a vast landscape allowed me to absorb the clarity and crispness of the air on such a brilliant day. The strong light created a truly dynamic scene, highlighting dramatic contrasts: the snow-covered mountains stood boldly against the deep greens of the fir and pine trees. There was also a striking interplay between the cool blues of the sky reflected in the water, the dark reflection of the mountain itself, and the light-coloured rock and sand on the lake's shore. Although it was May, a recent snowfall meant much of the mountain was still beautifully blanketed in white.
It's a celebration of the raw beauty of the Whistler landscape that I love so much, capturing that invigorating atmosphere directly onto the canvas.
