“Cloudy Day, Lighthouse Park” transports you right to the water's edge at Point Atkinson in Lighthouse Park, BC, capturing a dynamic, intimate moment under a shifting sky. By choosing a lower viewpoint, the viewer is drawn deep into the scene, almost standing on the wet, moss-covered rocks where they meet the cool Pacific water.
The focus here is not on the grand sunset drama, but on the vibrant, diffused energy of a classic West Coast day. The light, filtered through thick, billowing clouds, creates a complex, reflective surface on the water. This water is a rich tapestry of colour, picking up soft mauves, pale golds, and cool sky-blues, and is rendered with a lively, Impressionistic brushwork that conveys its movement and texture.
The granite rocks of the coastline, reveal their palette of cool greys, greens, and ochres, providing a robust, grounding foreground. The historical lighthouse stands watch in the distance beneath the vast, expressive sky.
To capture the atmospheric conditions, I worked primarily with a loosely applied brushstroke in the sky, building the clouds with thick, textural impasto to suggest their momentary shifts and the subtle play of light trying to break through. This piece is a celebration of the unique beauty found in the transitory moments of a cloudy day—a powerful, quiet scene that invites deep appreciation for the coastal landscape of British Columbia.
