The Elm Tree (After Inness)

Oil on Canvas, 20”x16” - For Sale

My reproduction of George Inness's "The Elm Tree" was a rewarding exploration of American Tonalism. Inness had an extraordinary ability to express a sense of atmosphere in his paintings, a quality that resonated with me. I chose this piece not only for my love of Inness’s work but also as a valuable exercise in learning how to mix an endless variety of summer greens from a limited palette of primary blues and yellows and reds.

In this faithful copy, the large, solitary elm tree dominates the canvas, its majestic silhouette standing against a mix of cloud and blue sky. A few smaller trees are nestled at its base, with one positioned closer to the foreground, adding depth to the scene. A subtle path and a gently rising bank of grass lead the viewer’s eye into the painting, with the smaller trees thoughtfully placed to help the gaze zig-zag further into the distance.

My aim in approaching this painting was to capture Inness's signature softness and his luminous, diffused light. I worked in careful layers, building up subtle transitions of colour and value. The focus was less on sharp detail and more on the harmonious blending of hues, particularly the subdued and harmonious palette of greens, golds, and greys. This process was an exercise in patience as I explored the seemingly endless varieties of greens in the scene! Like Inness, I employed looser brushwork, allowing forms and textures to be suggested rather than meticulously rendered, contributing to the overall atmospheric effect.

I'm pleased with how I was able to translate the beauty and quiet reverence of Inness's original. I hope this painting invites you to feel a similar sense of tranquility and a deep appreciation for the landscape.
