This study for a larger studio painting, “Jericho Fall Splendor”, draws you into a serene and vibrant view at Jericho Park in Vancouver. I paint there regularly because the ponds provide me with an ample variety of painting compositions, and I get to enjoy the abundant wildlife – everything from ducks and sparrows, to kingfishers, herons, eagles, and even amphibians like frogs and salamanders.
On this particular fall day, a silver, overcast sky illuminated the scene. My focus for this study was a close-up of a clump of bushes, with the shapes of trees visible in the background. What drew my eye were the abstract patterns formed by the reflections of the foliage on the water, creating a captivating mix of oranges, greens, greys, and browns. Sometimes colours appear more vibrant on overcast days; the diffused, less intense light allows for a greater emphasis on the colours themselves, rather than being washed out by bright sunlight, and this scene exemplified that. This particular study focuses purely on the mesmerizing dance of light and colour on the water.
I hope you can feel the same tranquility and connection to nature I experienced while capturing this beautiful, fleeting moment.
