"Lighthouse Park" captures the essence of West Vancouver's iconic Lighthouse Park. If you’re ever in the Vancouver BC area, be sure to visit this remarkable Canadian park; explore its old-growth forest, hike the scenic trails, visit the historic Point Atkinson Lighthouse, or picnic perched high up on one of the rocky outcroppings. You’ll often see eagles and seals, and maybe even whales passing by (as I did, painting there one afternoon).
For me, it’s the elephantine shapes and patterns of granite rock that interest me the most here, and they are the dominant focus of this painting. The rock itself has a beautiful salt and pepper texture, formed by two types of quartz packed together, while dark ribbons of metamorphic rock slice through, forming distinct shapes and blocks. This particular scene captures a late afternoon on a winter day. The usually light grey, salt-and-peppered rock has taken on a stunning orange and yellow glow from the setting sun. The view is wide enough to include the lighthouse itself, and even the distant Stanley Park in Vancouver. The weather on this day was shifting; clouds were starting to roll in. A large cloud had formed behind the lighthouse, and in the distance, a low row of clouds was forming over Stanley Park, creating an interesting light effect over the distant treeline. To emphasize the dramatic foreground, the sky and water were intentionally toned down, allowing the intense light on the rock to command attention.
My process for this piece began with a tonal underpainting in burnt sienna, which helped me establish the foundational forms and values before introducing colour. Working with strong design, simplified form, and energetic brushwork, I aimed to capture the feelings of majesty I experience in this remarkable Canadian park. Where the rocks meet the water’s edge, I used thick paint, working back and forth to create a seamless yet textural connection. I also experimented with Maroger medium in the water to achieve a distinct texture, ensuring the paint held its shape and detail. I hope you feel the raw energy and magnificence of this grand nature park
