Hey! What’s Up?

Sandra Hopley - Oil, 18”x24” - For Sale

“Hey! What’s Up” grew out of a photo my sister took near her home that instantly made me smile. The three sheep looked so curious, as though they were stepping forward to say hello. Just behind them, a llama hangs back in the doorway—more reserved, but still part of the scene. I was captivated by their expressions and by the sense of warmth and welcome they carried, even on a snowy winter day.

In painting this scene, I wanted to balance the warmth of life with the coolness of winter. Subtle pinks and mauves in the sky, touches of ochre and orange in the snow, and delicate greens in the sheep’s wool bring vibrancy to the muted palette. I paid special attention to the light falling in from the right, which gives the scene a gentle glow and grounds the composition.

What I love most is how these sheep seem to meet your gaze. They feel both watchful and friendly, like old acquaintances happy to see you again. For me, this piece is about that small, heartwarming connection—and I’m grateful for the charm and presence animals bring into our lives.
